Are you noticing this in your Gmail lately?

Dec 10, 2024

Here's what those are..
Hi friend,

I don’t know about you, but I was definitely seeing more of these in the Gmail Promo tab on my mobile. You might be too! Now it could be the lead up to Black Friday – either way it is a great topic for this week. From the varied examples found in my own inbox it is clear both products and services can take advantage of this Gmail feature to get attention in the mailbox!

The images, image carousels, and discount codes that you are seeing in the Promotions tab of your Gmail are possible because of something called Gmail Annotations.
You can annotate emails to display the following features in the Promotions tab:
  • Deal annotations – display text-based details about a promotion, such as a promotion code or expiration date.
  • Product carousels – display multiple image previews for a promotion. Include up to 10 image previews in a carousel, and each image must be unique.
  • Single image preview – use this feature for a single image

Imagine how cool this would be for your own campaign to stand out in Gmail? If your mailing list has a lot of Gmail subscribers, it’s worth the extra effort to grab their attention and share the value of the mail contents directly in the inbox listing.

How do I get started?

There is some custom code that is needed in your email. Some ESPs have functionality built in that will help you to create your annotations. If not, you’ll need to get your hands dirty with some coding skills. Get the code here and more details here.

We’re keen to help so that we can test a few more of these, so reply to this mail if you want to collaborate on this.

🐦The early bird gets the worm…..if you start using annotations now you will still be a relatively early adopter, so take advantage of your window while it’s open.

Note: it’s not available in Google Workspace (this means it isn’t viable to use Gmail annotations for B2B marketing).

Thanks for reading our Email Edge. Every week I try to share something useful in bite size pieces. Hopefully it sparks ideas for you try something new or leads to a better knowledge of email marketing and its possibilities.
